Wilhelm Werner expanded the castle and notably established a renowned library and a cabinet of curiosities within its walls. These collections became crucial sources for Froben Christoph von Zimmern, who authored the Zimmern Chronicle, an important historical record of the family's heritage and regional history.

Decline, sale, and later use

With the extinction of the male Zimmern line in the late 16th century, the castle's military relevance diminished. Its location on a narrow ridge made it vulnerable to artillery fire from higher surrounding terrain, a disadvantage as warfare evolved with gunpowder and cannon technology. Although the castle escaped direct war damage, it gradually fell into disrepair.

In 1594, after the death of Count Wilhelm von Zimmern, ownership passed to his eight sisters, who sold the castle to the city of Rottweil. By this time, Burg Herrenzimmern was no longer a fortress but had become a symbol of noble heritage. In the early 19th century, the castle was repurposed as a guesthouse, reflecting adaptive reuse of historic buildings during this period. The municipality of Herrenzimmern acquired the property in 1810, ensuring local stewardship.
