Arpaz Castle

Arpaz Castle, locally known as Arpaz Kalesi, is a distinctive example of a 19th-century tower house located in the village of Esenköy, south of the city of Nazilli in the Aydin province of Turkey. This castle reflects a unique blend of Ottoman architectural traditions with inspirations drawn from medieval fortifications, specifically influenced by the Naillac Tower on the island of Rhodes.

Historical background and origins

The castle was constructed in the first half of the 19th century by the local Ottoman lord, Bey Hacı Hasan. After returning from Rhodes, he commissioned the building of Arpaz Castle, inspired by the medieval defensive structures he had observed there. The site itself incorporated remnants of earlier buildings dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, which had suffered destruction by fire in 1829. This layering of historical periods gives the castle a complex architectural narrative combining early modern Ottoman and medieval influences.

Architectural features and layout

Structural design

Arpaz Castle is classified as a tower house, a type of fortified residence common in the region during this period. The main tower rises prominently, with its entrance located on the first floor rather than at ground level, a defensive feature that was typical for tower houses to protect against invaders. Access was originally secured by a drawbridge, emphasizing the castle's defensive purpose.

Defensive elements

The tower is surrounded by outbuildings and a fortified wall with buttresses, similar in style to the nearby Cincin Castle. These buttresses provided additional structural support and defense against attacks. The design reflects a practical approach to security, combining residential and military functions.

Current condition and surroundings

Today, Arpaz Castle stands on the grounds of a working farm, which limits public access to its interior. The castle's interior is not open for visitation, but the exterior remains a notable landmark in the area. The top of the tower has become a nesting site for several storks, adding a unique natural element to the castle's presence.

Arpaz Castle is one of only three surviving towers in the Aydin province. The other two notable towers are the Beyler Tower nearby and the Cihanoğlu Tower, located a bit further away. Together, these towers illustrate the region's historical reliance on fortified residences during the Ottoman period, serving both defensive and administrative roles.
