It was built on the site of an earlier castle belonging to the Dukes of Normandy, which was destroyed by the English in 1356 during the Hundred Years' War.

The current castle was constructed under the direction of Pierre II, Count of Alençon, who acquired the title of Viscount of Argentan in 1372. Pierre II resided in the castle until his death in 1404. Further royal visits include Catherine de' Medici and Henry II of France in 1562, and the reception of the papal legate by Charles IX in 1570. In 1589, Henry IV of France used the castle as a base during preparations for the siege of Falaise Castle, even celebrating Christmas there during the siege.

Later uses and preservation

By 1586, the castle was repurposed as the residence for the governors of Argentan, a role it maintained until 1727. Subsequently, it became the town hall and prison, undergoing further alterations to suit these civic functions. The castle suffered significant damage during the bombings of 1944 in World War II but was restored in the post-war period.

Currently, the Argentan Ducal Castle serves as the local courthouse and is not open to the public. Despite this, its historical and architectural significance remains valuable, especially when considered alongside the nearby Argentan Tower and Marguerite Tower, which together form a rich medieval heritage landscape in Argentan.
