Beş Kapılar Castle, also known locally as Beş Kapılar Kalesi, is a historic fortress located in the harbor town of Foça in the Izmir province of Turkey. This castle stands on a small peninsula that juts into the bay, a site with a rich history dating back to the ancient Greek city of Phocaea. The area was originally fortified by city walls that followed the natural outline of the peninsula, protecting the settlement and its important harbor.

The castle's name, which translates to "Five Doors Castle", derives from a distinctive section of the fortress featuring five gates. These gates were part of a defensive complex built into the city walls during the Ottoman period between 1538 and 1539, commissioned by Silahtar Iskender Ağa. At that time, the sea reached the castle walls, highlighting its strategic maritime role. The castle likely functioned more as a fortified boathouse, known locally as a kayıkhane, than as a traditional military fortress.

The origins of the fortifications at Foça trace back to the ancient Greek colony of Phocaea, with the earliest walls dating from approximately 590–580 BC. These early defensive structures were built to protect the prosperous city, which was notable for its maritime trade and cultural influence in the Aegean region.

Through the centuries, the fortress underwent multiple phases of rebuilding and repair. During the Byzantine era, the walls were maintained and reinforced to defend against various invasions and pirate raids. In the 13th century, the castle came under the control of the Republic of Genoa, a powerful maritime state from what is now Italy. The Genoese undertook significant reconstruction efforts, adapting the fortress to their defensive needs and enhancing its fortifications to secure their trading interests in the region.

During the 14th century, the castle gained historical significance when Şehzade Halil, an Ottoman prince, was abducted and imprisoned within its walls. This event underscores the castle's continued importance in regional political and military conflicts.

Following the Ottoman conquest of Foça, the fortress was further modified between 1538 and 1539. The Ottomans repaired the walls and added new towers, integrating the castle into their defensive network along the Aegean coast. These renovations reflected Ottoman military architecture and their strategic priorities in securing maritime routes.

Architectural features and layout

Beş Kapılar Castle occupies a commanding position on a peninsula surrounded by the sea on three sides, utilizing natural defenses to protect the harbor. Additionally, a large stretch of the city walls connected to the castle has been rebuilt in recent years, enhancing the overall historical ambiance of the site.

Despite these restoration efforts, the castle itself is currently not accessible to the public and does not serve any active function. The site remains an important symbol of Foça's rich past, attracting interest from historians, architects, and visitors intrigued by its layered history.

In recognition of its cultural and historical significance, the castle was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2013, underscoring its value as part of Turkey's heritage and the broader history of Mediterranean fortifications.
